Chief Development Engineer, Machine Connectivity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Development Engineer to lead the machine connectivity technology development and component platform management in the Asset Intelligence Development (AID) team within Core Technology. The AID team focuses on creating sensor solutions and algorithms that provide customer value adding information for digital lifecycle services about machine operations and condition. Additionally, the AID team designs and maintains both graphical and physical Human-Machine Interface solutions. The third main area of responsibility is to provide safe and secure machine connectivity for digital service applications and Industry 4.0 operational environments.

 

Core Technology division significantly enhances Konecranes products' functional safety, efficiency, and connectivity. Core Technology develops new products for all Konecranes businesses through business-driven development projects. The team uses agile methods and state-of-the-art tools to leverage the industry's top skills, advancing the creation of successful products.

 

This position is hybrid remote and based in Hyvinkää or Espoo, Finland and involves occasional hands-on testing in lab environments. The role requires readiness to travel to customers, vendor sites, manufacturing facilities, and certification bodies, both inside Finland and internationally.

 

 

Your key responsibilities

 

As Chief Development Engineer in the AID team, you will be responsible for coordinating both the big picture and detailed aspects of product development, ensuring the success and reliability of our remote connectivity solutions. Additionally, you will work closely with business stakeholders, application engineers, and project managers to align objectives and ensure smooth communication across teams.

 

  • Product Management and Development: Lead the development of connectivity devices for industrial machines by defining product requirements and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive product development from concept to launch and lifecycle management.
  • Radio Certification: Lead the process for obtaining necessary radio certifications for connectivity devices, ensure compliance with regulatory standards and certification requirements, and stay updated on changes in radio certification regulations to implement them accordingly.
  • Strategic Coordination: Develop and implement long-term strategies for connectivity device products, manage the overall product portfolio development, and ensure alignment with company goals and market demands.
  • Hands-on Evaluation and Testing: Conduct hands-on evaluation of connectivity devices (e.g. IoT Gateways) to ensure performance, reliability, and quality, and perform testing and troubleshooting to resolve technical issues.
  • Vendor Management: Identify, evaluate, and manage relationships with key vendors and suppliers, ensure they meet quality, cost, and delivery requirements, participate in commercial negotiations as a technical expert, and maintain strong communication throughout the partnership lifetime.
  • Manufacturing Oversight: Oversee the manufacturing process for remote connectivity devices, ensure production meets design specifications and quality standards, and collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize production efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Internal Communication: Maintain effective communication with business stakeholders and product owners to align product objectives and deliverables, collaborate with application engineers to integrate connectivity solutions into broader customer value adding industrial ecosystems, work with project managers to ensure project timelines, budgets, and resources are on track, and facilitate regular meetings and updates to ensure all stakeholders are informed and aligned on project status and priorities.

 

 

What should you bring?

 

You are ideal for the role if you are a strategic thinker with exceptional problem-solving and analytical abilities as well as strong communication and leadership skills.

 

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in product development, preferably in industrial machine connectivity devices, industrial IoT platforms or similar fields.
  • Proven expertise in product management and development processes.
  • Strong technical background with hands-on experience in device and testing.
  • Excellent project management and strategic planning skills.
  • Experience in managing vendor relationships and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of radio certification standards and regulatory compliance.
  • Fluent English.

Seen as an advantage:

  • Experience with industrial cranes, container handling or related industrial machinery.
  • Experience working with wireless communication technologies.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices for connectivity device development.
  • Experience in agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with cybersecurity frameworks.
  • Language Skills: Proficiency in additional languages can be beneficial, such as Finnish, German and Hindi.
