Chief Development Engineer

Everything we do, we do with passion and drive. We believe diversity drives business success and is the foundation for our growth. We welcome different backgrounds and skills that enrich our community and we promote a place where we can ALL be ourselves. This is what makes Konecranes a unique place to work.

We are seeking to hire a dedicated Chief Development Engineer to join our Embedded Software (ESW) team. It is a newly formed team, merging software development operations and resources. The team develops and maintains safe and secure embedded software solutions and platform, consisting of lean agile software development process management, compliance, software design and testing.

The ESW team supports other teams on leading edge software development methods and tools, like agile scrum, Lean development, requirement management, continuous integration, and automated testing. The team acts as the technical owner for Light Lifting Equipment-, Rope Hoist- and Winch control applications, including related smart features and integration to digital/IT tools and processes used on supply.

As our new Chief Development Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in developing and enhancing our embedded software solutions, ensuring they meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

The position is hybrid-remote and based in our headquarters in Hyvinkää, Finland, and will involve some business travel.

Your key responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the embedded software development team as the technical lead.
  • Oversee the design, development, and implementation of embedded software, focusing on the Rope Hoist Application.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define project requirements, objectives, and deliverables.
  • Develop and execute project plans, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality software products.
  • Conduct technical reviews and provide expertise in troubleshooting and resolving complex software issues.
  • Promote code reusability and platform thinking: Implement modular design principles and reusable code libraries to enhance efficiency and scalability across projects.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to drive innovation within the team.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, creativity, and collaboration within the team.

What should you bring?

You are ideal for the role if you have a strong background in embedded software, working with real physical devices that have gone to use. You have a passion for innovation, and the ability to drive complex projects from concept to completion. You are equally good at working with technology as well as people.

You should have:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least around 10 years of experience in embedded software development, with 5+ years in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience in the industrial or manufacturing sector.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering complex embedded software projects.
  • Strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming and development tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of microcontrollers, microprocessors, and real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Experience with software-hardware integration, debugging, and testing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISO 13849, IEC 61508, IEC 62443, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles related to embedded software.
  • Experience with communication protocols (e.g., CAN and CANOpen, Wireless, etc.).
  • Fluent English – it’s our main working language; Finnish, German and Hindi are an advantage.
